O Capetown the carefree with your lights all aglow,
Tis little the dangers of darkness you know.
The hardness of walls that you simply can’t see
The lie-in-wait kerb stones that trip you with glee.
When you open your doors and step out at night,
You see the lamps gleaming, so steady and bright.
We stand by our doorways in darkness profound,
For the thousandth time over ‘that Man’ we confound.
And if we are reckless and we hurry our stride,
With something or someone we’re bound to collide.
Apologies they automatic do come,
A post or lady they both remain dumb.
So Capetown the carefree, we lie in your bay,
Admiring the night you’ve turned into day.
But though all your lights they gleam ever so bright,
We’d change them all gladly for England tonight!
